Testimony Gets Underway in BP Trial
Description: The first witness has taken the stand in the BP civil trial underway in New Orleans. University of California engineering professor Robert Bea testified on behalf of the businesses, individuals and families seeking money for their losses. Bea told Judge Carl Barbier and others in the courthouse that the explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig was the result of BP's practice of trying to save every dollar possible.
Bea said BP had outlined a more stringent policy to help guarantee safety on its rigs, knowing the risk of a blowout in the Gulf of Mexico wone of its greatest concerns. But, he said the company did not exercise the policy on most of the rigs in the Gulf because the process took more time and cost more money.
Bea is a former consultant for BP and he helped investigate the Exxon Valdez spill.
